Cambodian cinema is preparing for another international step as Phnom Penh-based Wonder Film Entertainmentbrings two Khmer-produced films to the American Film Market 2026 in Los Angeles.
The films are SOMA: Evolution Begins and The Rise of the Black Nun: Pali’s Awakening, also known in Khmer as «កំណើតអរូប ២».
Wonder Film announced the plans in September, describing its participation as an opportunity to introduce Cambodian productions to international distributors, sales companies, producers and other film-industry partners. AMS Infotainment report
Cambodian Films Enter a Global Marketplace
The American Film Market, or AFM, is not primarily a public film festival. It is an international marketplace where producers, distributors, financiers and sales companies meet to buy, sell and develop film projects.
The 2026 event is scheduled for November 10–15 in Los Angeles, with its headquarters at the Fairmont Century Plaza. AFM has confirmed Wonder Film Entertainment among its exhibitors from Cambodia. American Film Market 2026 information
For Wonder Film, it will be the company's first time taking Cambodian films to the American Film Market, although the studio has previously pursued international distribution for its work. Kampuchea Thmey report
‘SOMA’ Brings Cambodian Science Fiction to the Market
SOMA: Evolution Begins is a 2026 science-fiction, drama, thriller and action film directed by Visal Sem.
The story follows Soma, a young woman struggling to support her family who becomes involved in a secret biomedical experiment controlled by a wealthy businessman. The experiment produces unexpected changes that transform her life and set the story on a much larger path.
The official Film Catalogue lists the movie at 123 minutes and names Khemma Metaver, Venghour Leav, Daraty Chan, John Maclaren and Christian Parker among its cast. SOMA: Evolution Begins — The Film Catalogue
Wonder Film has said the production took nearly two years to complete, with extensive use of visual-effects and CGI work. The film is scheduled to open in Cambodian cinemas on October 8, 2026. Kampuchea Thmey report
Khmer Horror Also Goes International
The second film, The Rise of the Black Nun: Pali’s Awakening, is a supernatural horror thriller set partly against Cambodia's historical and spiritual landscape.
Its story takes place in Cambodia in 1971, combining supernatural horror with Khmer spiritual traditions and elements connected to the war era. The official listing identifies Visal Sem as director and Koy Anna among a larger international cast. The Rise of the Black Nun — The Film Catalogue
A Wider Door for Khmer Cinema
Taking Cambodian films to AFM does not guarantee international distribution, but it places Khmer filmmakers directly inside a marketplace designed to create those opportunities.
For Cambodia's growing film industry, participation gives producers a chance to meet international buyers, study global market demand and build relationships that could eventually bring more Cambodian productions to audiences outside the country.
It also provides another way for Khmer stories, performers and filmmakers to become visible internationally—not simply as subjects of foreign productions, but through films developed and produced by Cambodian studios themselves.
For Khmer communities abroad, especially in the United States, that expanding presence offers another connection to a Cambodian creative industry that is increasingly looking beyond its domestic market.
