I’ve been thinking about something that could be useful for older Khmer people who can read Khmer but may have trouble navigating phones that are mostly in English.
This is the idea behind the BeKhmer Khmer Launcher.
Instead of a normal Android home screen filled with small icons and unfamiliar labels, the launcher would use large buttons, clear Khmer text, and only the most important phone functions—things like Phone, Messages, Contacts, Camera, Photos, Apps, and family shortcuts.
The goal is to make a smartphone feel much easier and less intimidating for our parents and grandparents.
This would be a BeKhmer community project and would be completely free to use:
No purchase. No subscription. No ads.
There may be a subtle BeKhmer theme or default wallpaper so people know where it came from, but the interface itself would stay clean and focused on the person using the phone.
We’re planning to start with Android, since Android allows us to replace the normal Home screen with a custom launcher.
The image below is an early concept of what it could look like.
I’d really like to hear from the Khmer community on this one:
Would something like this be useful for your parents, grandparents, or relatives? What would you want included on the main screen?
